A Recipe to De-Stress

by Gillian on May 16, 2012

Sometimes after a stressful day I come home from work and crash on the couch.

I sit there, motionless, with no energy to spare.

Sometimes I crawl into bed with a book.

Sometimes I uncork a bottle of wine.

Yesterday, I decided to take the kind of advice I would give to a friend and do exactly what I knew would make me feel physically and emotionally better.

  • Take your vitamins (vitamin C, L-Tyrosine, B12)
  • Go for a long walk outside
  • Listen to some good (relaxing) music
  • Enjoy a leisurely dinner with healthy fats and Omega 3′s (salmon and avocado)
  • Talk with a loved one
  • Pour a hot bath and add some epsom salts and lavender oil
  • Dig into your favourite chocolate

How do you de-stress after a long day?

I chat with good friends and my parents, and exercise after a long day. Perfect de-stressors.

Sounds like the perfect way to unwind to me. A hot bath, glass of wine or peppermint tea are my staples on a day that’s rough. Thanks for sharing.

That night sounds relaxing to me! It depends on what kind of stress I’m feeling. Most times, a run, green smoothie, and shower do the trick for me! Or I clean… which is weird, because I hate cleaning. I think it just makes me feel like I accomplished something.

those area great ideas! i definitely can relate to the feeling of just being so zapped you just sit there in the shell of yourself so empty of energy. it sucks! i try to have a mug of tea and talk to nate or close my eyes for 10mins just to re center myself completely unplugging from everything!

This depends on why I am stressed or how I feel (physically exhausted? or just mentally?) Sometimes I recover best when it’s just me and some music, a good book, a good film or just my bed (I sometimes feel like I’m “talked out” and need some pure “me” time). Sometimes talking to a good friend on the phone is all I need. Sometimes just being hugged by my boyfriend and all is well. Sometimes I need a good body pump class or some running to clear my mind and get my physically exhausted as well, sometimes I need some yoga to feel in balance again. But chocolate is ALWAYS good medicine !!! :-)

Sounds like a great way to relax! I take L-Tyrosine too :) I definitely can always relax when I get in the tub with some bath salts and a good book…aaah. Ultimate relaxation, oh and a glass of wine never hurts either!

Locking myself in the bathroom so they can’t find me works; but they always seem to find me!
Escaping with my Hubby at least once a month works when your life is crazy and not always your own.

Love your ideas. Will keep those in mind next time I am running to hide!!

I de-stress by relaxing and doing things I love or nothing at all. Bumming at home and streaming TV shows… something that doesn’t require thinking!

Oh, how I love this post! I’ve been needing to reflect on my favorite ways to de-stress the last few days. Talking to my mom ALWAYS works. Bubble baths, hot tea, chocolate… and going out with my girlfriends and dancing my @ss off. Any exercise is great, but there is something about moving to music that just makes me feel SO alive!
