Asian Inspired

This post is an ode to my favourite Asian inspired dishes to make at home!

If you follow me on instagram you know that last night I made a Japanese feast for John and I.

I had never made John sushi and decided this had to change!  I’ve been making sushi for friends for years and it’s such a treat to enjoy at home.  It’s time consuming, but it’s beautiful, therapeutic, and everyone always appreciates it so much.  I know I’ll be making it for my family and friends in France soon!

As I rolled together nori sheets stuffed with sushi rice, salmon, ginger, mango, avocado and cucumber, I realized how much I need to bring back Asian flavours to my ktichen.

Growing up in Vancouver I was raised on sushi, Japanese curry, teriyaki and Chinese food.  I always crave these familiar tastes and have come up with some fun Asian inspired dishes while living in Toronto over the years.

Here are some of my favourites:

Mango ginger sushi

Miso ginger dressing

miso salad dressing

Raw sushi bowl

Kelp noodles with miso gravy
raw miso kelp noodles

Asparagus with miso dipping sauce

Chinese take-in

Easy nori wraps
sushi rolls

What beautiful dishes! I am a big fan of your miso ginger dressing.

I am moving to Vancouver in the fall. Would love a post on some of your favourite Vancouver eats! (Or any suggestions you have)

Wow! Thanks so much. I didn’t know you could do that on google maps! I have heard great things about the Twisted Fork and the Dirty Apron. My Mom and I went for brunch at Cafe Medina when we were in Vancouver a few weeks ago. It was fantastic!

I love Google maps, I make one before all of my trips with places I want to visit :) I still have to try Cafe Medina! The waffles look incredible!

If you love food stores you should also go to Gourmet Warehouse!!

i was driving 4 hours back home last night when i spotted your shots and my god were they making me hungry haha! did you know sea snax makes a rainbow seaweed salad? it’s amazing! you simply soak some for 7 mins and drain then i add rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, tamari and red chili flakes! it takes just like the restaurant version sans me having an allergic reaction to the wheat in soy sauce haha

Japanese feast, indeed! Very nice. I love the ginger dressing, looks divine! Kevin and I often have Japanese feasts as well where we organize all the roll fillings and roll sushi for awhile. Super fun activity when you have dinner guests.

That’s a great idea! As a control freak I tend to take over the rolling, but that sounds way more fun!

This looks so incredibly beautiful, Gillian! I am always a little sad that I pay very little attention to the presentation of my meals during the work week. I kind of scarf down breakfast, eat lunch – always a little stressed out and rarely focused in the moment – and then when dinner time comes I am still in the office, so I usually munch on a bar before going to sports or fix myself a very quick and late dinner (which involves throwing together some prepared carb, a protein, some veg, dump it in a bowl and ready). Every time I look at your beautiful meals, I tell myself that I would relax and enjoy everything so much more that way! Please keep being so inspirational!! :-)

Thank you Marie-Sophie! Trust me, all of my meals don’t look like this! Many days I will come home, and like you dump a bunch of things I love into a big salad bowl and dig in!

I have been experimenting w/ nori wraps and kelp noodles…I made a lovely sauce for the noodles with sunflower seed butter I will have to post next time I make them…super simple too! They are quite crunchy though…I wrapped them in chard and nori though which was a fun twist! Have a great day!

Your Asian food looks ah-mazing – you can tell you grew up in Van! I also grew up in Van (and Steveston) and my boyfriend’s mum is Japanese, so to say I’m missing sushi here in Toronto is an understatement! We’ve taken to making our own too :) Toshi is the only place we’ve found that is authentic, but you definitely pay for it!

I agree 100%! We love Toshi sushi (it’s really the only place we’ll go), but it’s definitely more of a treat because of the price! Have you tried the miso scallops?
