A Ladies Guide to Drinking like a Gentleman

by Gillian on January 7, 2013

Skip the sugary drinks – Gentleman don’t drink cosmos.  Try a Negroni, a Last Word, or a Manhattan.  You’ll drink a little bit slower, cut your hangover in half and double your class.

If you can afford it, buy your ladies drinks – Gentlemen pick up the tab when they can.  If you’ve got the extra cash, buy a lady a drink.  There’s something empowering on both ends to cut this tradition and show your love for your fellow woman.  A female bartender bought my girlfriend and I drinks the other night and it left us beaming.

Gentlemen don’t get sloppy – Keg stands and slurred words are for frat boys, not gentlemen.  Keep within your drink limit where you can still be coherent, charming, and having a good time.

Never drink through a straw – The only drinks that need straws are pina coladas, which you shouldn’t be ordering anyways.

Slow sip the good stuff – Splurge on a good whiskey, the better gin, and your favourite vodka.  Don’t add a splash of coke, just slow sip and make it last.

Splurge on good Champagne – Some cheap bubbly is totally doable and perfect for a casual dinner party.  But once and a while, go for the Dom.  The taste is exquisite but the act itself feels like a celebration of life.

love this! you are know we love a good drink ;) but love making homemade margaritas lately (good tequila, fresh lime juice, and sometimes kombucha or cointreau) We use kombucha a lot to make drinks ;)

Love this post. I always get some raised eyebrows when I order a nice scotch before dinner, but I’d rather sip something nice for a long time than keep having to order something else. Bring back the classic cocktails!

I am all about the champagne. I did a great job on my 2012 new year’s resolution to drink more bubbles that this year I’m striving to drink even more.

Oh, and one more thing I’d add to your list — Monday is a good enough excuse to open a bottle of your good stuff. I used to save my good bottles for the perfect moment, but then I had to keep dusting them as part of my cleaning routine. Now good company is all I need to open up a good bottle of wine or champagne, it transforms a regular day into something fabulous.

I love this. I have been working on celebrating Mondays (bubbly included) lately. We should have a Monday date!

Awesome. I love this. I’m a total man drinker anyways. I can’t stand vodka or hard liquor mixed with anything, besides water;) I’m odd, at least that’s what my friends say. I love my drinks!

My favorite drink is a Vodka-Seven. I’ll sometimes do Vodka-Water but sometimes I just can’t take the straight alcohol!

My beverage of choice are actually two:
1) a good crisp white wine – I LOVE German white wines such as “Grauburgunder” (pinot gris), “Weißburgunder” (pinot blanc) or a Riesling;
2) single malt whisky! I lived in Glasgow, Scotland, for a year and even though it’s not exactly a “ladies drink” ;-) , I enjoy it! A good whisky is something you savour throughout the whole evening.

But of course, nothing beats a glass of bubbly when there’s something to celebrate :-)
